Tackling Homelessness - Case Studies

Tackling Homelessness - Case Studies

Posted 1st April 2021

Back in 2018 the Housing Plus Academy Think Tank ran a two day event on ‘Homelessness: A National Scandal’. As part of the response to the event the Housing and Communities team at the London School Of Economics then commenced to look at innovative and collaborative models that successfully prevented homelessness. Given that a significant proportion of the homelessness population have been in care and the approach that the House Project was taking with young people they worked with the NHP to draw up the following case study that was included in their final report.

The report documents 17 case studies of homelessness provision and support in the United Kingdom. Promoting shared learning amongst the providers of homelessness support can improve the capacity and delivery of homelessness initiatives. LSE Housing's research demonstrates the complex and multi-faceted nature of homelessness and the need for varied approaches and services to tackle it. The core aim of the report is to foster greater knowledge exchange and sharing of good practice, to help more people access a stable, secure, safe place to call home.

The National House Project (NHP) has been hosting apprentices since 2021. The organisation, which was incorporated as a charity in 2018, works with local authorities that have set up their own Local House Project (LHP), a scheme that helps young people leave care in a planned and supported way. Young people, both in and leaving care, are brought together in groups to create their first homes, learn new skills and join a long-term community of support that can develop pathways into education, employment and training. With 17 LHPs established across England, involving more than 700 young people, around half of these local projects provide apprenticeships as part of their offer, explains Sue Hammersley, director of NHP. There have been three young people so far that have undertaken an apprenticeship with NHP. Hammersley says all apprenticeships offered at NHP and across the LHPs are business administrative roles, although one project in Oxford has offered a participation apprenticeship after linking in with a local college.
