CLNM Conference 2025: Interdependence in Action

CLNM Conference 2025: Interdependence in Action

Posted 16th December 2025

The Care Leavers National Movement (CLNM) Conference 2025 brought together young people, Local House Projects (LHPs), staff and partners from across the country for a day of inspiration, connection and learning. This year’s theme, 'Interdependence', shaped every part of the event, highlighting the importance of support, collaboration and strong relationships in helping care-experienced young people thrive.

From thought-provoking speakers to youth-led workshops and practical activities, the conference showcased the power of community and the difference young people make when their voices lead the way.

The morning began with a session from Alex Barker (Be More Pirate), who encouraged everyone to challenge the ordinary, think boldly and make meaningful change in their communities. Her message set the tone for the day: interdependence isn’t about doing it alone - it’s about working together to create something better.

CLNM then introduced the Peer Evaluation 2025, sharing insights into the impact LHPs have on young people’s lives. The evaluation explored how House Projects create stronger connections, build confidence and develop a sense of belonging — all key elements of interdependence. Delegates were invited to reflect on the findings and contribute ideas to shape future recommendations.

With the first break came a chance to explore interactive stalls, take part in activities, and enjoy some friendly competition with the quiz. The room was full of energy, conversation and curiosity as attendees connected with teams from across the House Project community.

After the break, CLNM representatives took to the stage to share powerful personal journeys. They spoke about how their Local House Projects have supported them to work interdependently, overcome challenges, and build confidence — showing interdependence not as a concept, but as lived experience. The conference then turned to the research and consultation work the CLNM reps have been involved in over the past year. Highlights included:

  • LIMITLESS: A long-term project helping care-experienced young people capture and celebrate everyday memories. CLNM reps co-designed resources with researchers and professionals, transforming ideas into tools that support wellbeing and identity.
  • IMPACT (Improving Adult Care Together): Reps from different LHPs shared experiences and insights into the support young people need beyond age 25, contributing to national conversations about adult care and long-term support.

The afternoon continued with more inspiring stories from CLNM reps, who shared how asking for help, supporting one another and building strong networks have shaped their journeys.

A highlight of the day was the Aspirational Awards, which celebrated young people who have pursued new skills, launched creative projects, reconnected with family overseas and explored passions that matter deeply to them. Their achievements demonstrated what can happen when ambition meets opportunity.

Alex Barker returned for a second Be More Pirate session, encouraging attendees to take forward what they had learned and think creatively about how they can make change in their communities.

The conference also marked the announcement of the new CLNM Champions for 2026, recognising young people who have shown exceptional leadership, influence and commitment throughout the year.

The day closed with prize-giving for the best stalls and quiz winners - a moment of celebration that captured the creativity, enthusiasm and community spirit that defined the event.

The success of the CLNM Conference would not have been possible without the generous contributions of our partners. A heartfelt thank you to:

  • GES – Global Experience Specialists, who supported the planning, staging and materials for the conference, including the impressive Interdependence ship that anchored the event space.
  • Wienerberger UK, who sponsored the hamper prizes for the best LHP stall and the conference quiz winner.
  • Smart Works Charity and Suited & Booted, who ensured every CLNM rep leading the conference had a high-quality professional outfit to wear on the day and keep for future opportunities, from job interviews to celebrations.

Their support reflects a shared belief in young people and the importance of creating opportunities that build confidence, pride and interdependence.

The CLNM Conference 2025 was a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when young people lead and communities come together. Throughout the day, interdependence was not only discussed - it was demonstrated, celebrated and lived.

We extend our thanks to every CLNM rep, LHP staff member, partner and supporter who contributed to making the day meaningful, thoughtful and full of inspiration.

Together, we continue to strengthen the House Project community and champion the voices of care-experienced young people.
